Henry Wheeler Shaw said: “As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of demand.” Most people don’t want the truth because they can’t handle it. If that describes you, stop here - this isn’t for you.

But I bet it is, because you’re no dummy. You know deep down, that the way you’ve been building your business just isn’t good enough. You’ve come to realize that there has to be a better way.

There is. But first, it’s important to understand what network marketing is really all about. You see, regardless of what you might have been told, network marketing is first and foremost a people business. It’s a business that’s based on individual relationships. And with good leadership the dream of having a duplicating, self-replicating business becomes a reality.

Network marketing is NOT mass marketing. It’s not about big ad campaigns or trying to beat mainstream businesses at their own game. Network marketing is personal, it’s about starting on a shoestring. It’s the only part-time opportunity that’s proven to deliver full-time earnings in countless real world examples (I’ll give you a few case studies below...)

Forget this simple fact and you’ll very quickly end up blowing a lot of money trying to find prospects with little to show for it.

So I’ll tell you why network marketing seems so hard. Network marketing is a little like playing “Pin The Tail On The Donkey.” Selling your product and services or recruiting new business builders is like being blindfolded in a pitch-black room with the tail in your hand. Your job is to pin it to the target.

You’ve been fumbling about in the dark because you haven’t had access to some vital information about your prospects. You had no way of knowing what they were thinking about. So a lot of what you thought was true about them, isn’t. If you’ve sponsored anyone at all, it’s probably closer to an accident than planned.

You’ve been prospecting in the dark and you didn’t even know it!

If you don’t know what your prospect really wants, nothing else matters. Your chances of connecting with them is at best, random.

When you know what your prospect is thinking you know exactly what to say in your ads. You know exactly what to say on the phone. You know exactly what to put on your web site, in your letters or even in your YouTube video’s.

In fact, knowing what your prospect wants, what they really want to accomplish more than anything else - that conversation that’s going on in their head - is the key to making all sorts of promotional tools work.

Read it again if you have too, just make sure that if there’s one concept you come away with from this message, let it be this one. If you can truly understand and grasp this concept you’ll be well ahead of other network marketers (and small business owners too).

Your biggest concerns in business should be knowing 1) Who your prospect is, 2) What your prospect wants more than anything, and MOST IMPORTANTLY 3) Why they want it.

These three elements (I call them the 3 “W’s”) are at the core of all network marketing, advertising and prospecting success. Everything else is secondary.

So if you’re being taught that...

  • All it takes is 2...
  • You should only contact your warm market...
  • The 3 foot rule...
  • Everyone is your prospect...
  • Prospects will come to you...
  • The product/opportunity sells itself...
  • It’s not selling, it’s sharing...
  • You gotta spend big money on advertising...
  • You need to blog/build a web site/social network/etc.

...it’s time to forget what you’ve been taught and start over. Put your names list away, stop paying for ads, put a hold on building your web site until you understand the Who, What & Why a prospect would ever join your business.

Believe me when I tell you that it’s not your fault that you’re struggling in network marketing. Why? Because until today, you didn’t know what was missing. Get a grip on these three elements and your business will look very different very quickly.

Ignorance = Bliss Failure In Network Marketing

There are two fundamental things that separates network marketing from other types of businesses and ways of making money. And in large part these two factors explain about 90% of the problems and frustrations people experience in this business.

  1. With 18 Million people just in the USA alone involved in network marketing, it’s the only business model marketed to the general public on such a massive scale. Think about what this really means for a second... There are huge implications. Network marketing is often promoted on the premise that “anyone can do this.” There are other business opportunities that promote this way too, but none have even come close to the scope of network marketing.
     
  2. Nowhere else will you find over 18 Million people trying to do something they know little about. It’s amazing really. Millions of people trying to run a business and only about 1% of them have any experience in running a business of any kind.

The average network marketing newbie has almost ZERO business skills and little if any prospecting skills. That’s not right or wrong - it’s just what it happens to be.

What’s not OK is that people are told that they don’t need any skills to run their business or make it grow into the income only 3% enjoy. They are told they don’t need to know anything about marketing or about qualifying people. They are told, “Don’t worry about who your prospect is, what they really want or why they want it... just start talking to people.” “It will all work by itself, like magic.”

So, right off the bat, people are given the impression that a dog with a note in it’s mouth could do it  (I was actually told that by my sponsor in my first company). And the little “sales training” or “prospecting education” network marketing companies do provide is, sorry to say, ineffective.

Here are some of the problems with mainstream network marketing training today:

  • No professional training on prospecting is provided.
  • Training that is provided is ineffective, annoying and can turn your warm market against you in a heart beat.
  • Distributors are not told the truth about the skills, time, money and resources they will need.
  • Distributors are not given the complete picture on the pro’s AND con’s of the various advertising and lead generation options available to them.
  • Distributors are taught to sell on hype , flash their uplines check or company success story.
  • Distributors are taught to use “I” focused communication instead of the much more effective “you” focused model. The result is that most marketers resemble the stereotypical salesperson that everyone hates.
  • People are fed the most blatant and deceptive lies about marketing ever: “Any smart person will jump right on this!”
  • Distributors are deceived into thinking that Mass-Marketing on the Internet is easy and cheap.
  • And of course the universal answer to everything: “You just need to talk to more people!

Do you know what happens when people who don’t understand the 3 “W’s” (who, what, why) try to prospect or promote their business?

They resort to hype. Why? Because to the untrained individual, the most natural thing to do (especially when they realize that their product/opportunity isn’t selling itself) is to over-exaggerate and make inflated claims about what it will do for someone.

In some cases companies and uplines actually model this behavior in meetings and conferences - not knowing that any short term gain they get from this actually hurts them in the long haul.

I’ve been to many conferences that featured a company leader - the guy or gal that everyone looks up to -  running around on stage like they just got off an amphetamine binge - yelling to a cheering crowd: “Go diamond, break seven!”

The suggestion is given, if not said outright, that the surest way to success in network marketing is to get all amped up with so much bubbling enthusiasm that your opportunity will be contagious. People will just want to do what you do because you’re so head over heels for it. But all this really does is reinforce the cult image many people label our industry with.

When you recognize what your prospect really wants, you won’t need to fake it to make it.

Why it’s so hard to pick up the phone

Do you know why it’s so hard to pick up the phone and call someone off your list to invite them to your next opportunity meeting? 99 times out of 100 it’s because they don’t give a crap about your opportunity. No one does. They couldn’t care less. They are just listening to be polite. And deep inside you know it -- that’s why you have to psyche yourself up to do it.

And it’s not any easier if you advertise or get a leads list - people who are supposedly looking for an opportunity. They are not sitting by the phone waiting to hear from you. If you call, chances are that you’re interrupting dinner and invading their personal space. Most often their first response will be one of skepticism and annoyance. No wonder the phone weighs 1,000 pounds!

So what’s the solution?

Are there people who are such good persuaders that they could sell ice to Eskimos? Sure. There are people who can convince just about anyone to sign up.

Can you? I sure can’t. I’ve only met a handful of marketers who can. It’s OK if you want to learn how to be a super persuader... but it’s not duplicatable and it’s totally unnecessary.

You don’t need to convince anyone to join your business. You don’t need to learn to be more persuasive. That’s the hard way! There are more than enough people looking for a real opportunity - you only need to know where to find them and know how to determine IF you have something that they already want.

But haven’t people gotten rich in network marketing just showing people the plan, inviting them to meetings, getting referrals?

Sure, but it’s 2008! Building your downline using only your warm market and a “get them to the meeting” approach may have worked in the 1970’s when network marketing was still pretty new - but not today.

People are smarter today - or at least they’ve gotten burned by these tricks in the past and they’re sick of it. No one really wants to go to meetings and no one wants to feel obligated or pressured to sign up.

The biggest problem with this approach is that it totally ignores one of the most important marketing fundamentals of all...

Your Prospects Perception Of You Actually Matters... A Lot!

Think about this for a moment. There is a very big difference in how your prospect responds (any prospect BTW) if they view you as a nuisance as opposed to someone who can help them get what they want. This positioning makes all the difference in the world.

Your prospect’s perception of you, right from the first contact, sets up everything that happens afterward. Your success or failure in prospecting hinges on your ability to present yourself as a consultant - someone who can help the prospect get what it is he or she wants in a natural way - without manipulation or dirty tricks.

The problem is that your outdated, stale, stereotypical “used car salesman” techniques are not going to get you there. You need a different approach to switch the light on and take the blindfold off.

Stop and imagine for a moment what it would really be like to never have to talk to disinterested, negative, even hostile prospects again.

Let that sink in for a bit. What kind of impact would that have on you?

What if, from now on you could position yourself so that no matter where a prospect came from - your warm market, ads, even lead lists - you only talked to prospects that actually have an interest in what you have to offer? What if you had a method to guarantee that you only talked to people who wanted to talk to you?

What if instead of being perceived as some schmo trying to sell your scam, you were viewed as a professional and your opinions were actually respected?

How would this affect your prospecting results? Your business? Your income? Your confidence? Your attitude?

There are a number of things that happen when people start applying this “3 W’s” approach in their business. When you know what your prospect is thinking it affects your confidence. That in turn affect’s your posture and how you’re perceived by your prospect (as someone there to help rather than be a pest). This naturally affects the results you get... which bring you full circle - making you that much more confident!

Here are a few more changes people see...

  2. Finding and/or generating leads becomes a non-issue.
  3. They are no longer desperate to sign up any one person, which totally changes their posture and in turn totally changes their results.

  5. They start sponsoring more people with less effort - consistently.

Calvin D. of New Hampshire was spending over $800 a month in Google AdWords ads. “I was generating leads but they were costing me an arm and a leg.” says Calvin. “I was generating about 50 leads a month.” Calculating the cost per lead based on his monthly budget Calvin was spending around $16 per lead.

The more disastrous part was that out of the 50 leads Calvin generated, he only sponsored 3 or 4 at the most. “I was doing what all the traffic guru’s were telling me and it was killing my budget and straining my relationship with my wife.” he commented.
