Program Transcript & Notes:Don't Fall For The Guru TrapIf you want to master a subject - any subject from self defense to being profitable in network marketing the most effective way to do that is to find an expert that is willing and able to teach you. We talked about this on Tip 21.
And while this makes perfect and logical sense... it does lead a lot of aspiring marketers into something I call “The Guru Trap.”
Let me explain...
When you know what you are doing in a particular field you can look at advice and pick and choose what to use and how to use it. The deciding factor being that you have the experience to know where something could fit in and then test it.
This is similar
to an experienced musician being able to improvise with the rest of the band.
But a 6th grader just learning to play the guitar can’t even begin to think about improvisation... or putting together different parts to create a new and greater whole.
When you are furiously trying to achieve your first wins in business and it doesn’t work - you end up feeling, and sounding schizophrenic.
It’s extremely frustrating too - because it seems like you know a lot.
It feels like you should be hitting home runs, but you’re not.
You’re spinning your wheels and sinking deeper in debt and it feels like a horrible nightmare. It starts to seem like the whole network marketing world is a giant conspiracy to vacuum out your wallet.
Let me give you some advice on how to deal with this... to keep yourself from going deeper into debt and most importantly to see real results - real wins and actually earning a profit from your
business.
First, recognize that many marketers are trying to sell you the idea that you can automate your way into a multi-million dollar income. That with their tools and their methods you can have a endless supply of traffic and customers.
There are several problems with the mentality of slapping up a website and spamming the world with automated software, tools and methods and making money. While some of these methods do on occasion produce income - it’s never long
lasting.
I’ve covered it on other tips, but I’ll say it again... network marketing is a real business and you have to invest time, energy and effort into it - not just money.
The second major issue is that the “syndicate” is working against you.
What most people don’t know is that there is a syndicate of well known network marketing guru’s that coordinate their email marketing and the release of new courses and tools. They hope you
never find out about this because then you would know that they’re really just selling and reselling the same hashed over methods to an unsuspecting public.
Here’s how they do this... while one guru marketer launches a so-called new product, all the other marketers in the “syndicate” promote it to their prospects. Each touting the worthiness of the ‘new’ product to ring in sales.
Their goal is for the public to perceive what really is a
deceptive practice, as a testimonial - they want people to believe that the new product worked miracles - especially since so many other well known guru’s are promoting it.
If you see several guru’s suddenly promoting the same course, company or tool you’ve probably spotted the syndicate - If you watch for a while you’ll notice this pattern over and over! Take special care before you spend any money!
The third issue, is that it’s way too easy
to have too many teachers. Even when they are legit - having too many teachers creates conflicting advice and mixed direction.
One of the most common complaints I get from marketers is that they are overloaded with information. And even if they didn’t know about the first two issues, they’re not quite sure whom they can trust.
The worst way to learn how to build a network marketing business is to subscribe to 25 different newsletters, blogs or video channels and skim
as much free stuff from as many people as possible.
The best way to master the building of your network marketing business is to pick one - certainly not more than two or three people whose approaches are highly complimentary and get their best materials.
Narrow your focus - make yourself a student and devote yourself to ONE path - something based on evidence, common sense and truth.
You need to learn to think like ONE person you can relate to - to the point where you burn their moves into your muscle memory. Eventually you’ll know exactly how they would handle almost any situation. That’s how true mentoring really works.
And the rest... unsubscribe... because you can’t master network marketing - or marketing of any type - by treating it like a giant pick-and-choose buffet.
And that’s how you stay out of the guru trap!
